Boxes of laminate or vinyl planks for a floor — including the 10% waste allowance for cuts.
Boxes needed
How it works
Boxes = ceil(floor area × 1.10 ÷ coverage per box) Example: ceil(20 m² × 1.10 ÷ 2 m²) = 11 boxes
Worked example: a 20 m² floor with boxes covering 2 m² each needs ceil(20 × 1.10 ÷ 2) = ceil(11) = 11 boxes. The 10% allowance covers cuts at edges and around door frames.
Frequently asked questions
Why add 10% waste?
Planks are cut at room edges, around door frames and at angles. On a plain rectangular room 10% is usually enough; a room with many angles needs more.
Does this include underlay?
No. Underlay is sold separately and is usually measured by the same floor area, without the waste allowance.
What if the room is not rectangular?
Measure the longest length and the longest width and multiply them. That slightly overstates an L-shaped room, which is safer than understating it.
Should I keep a spare box?
Yes, if you can. A spare box from the same batch covers future repairs without a colour mismatch.
