How it works

Bricks = ceil(wall area × bricks per m² × 1.10)
Example: ceil(20 × 60 × 1.10) = 1,320 bricks

Worked example: a 20 m² wall at 60 bricks per square metre needs 20 × 60 = 1,200 bricks before waste, and 1,200 × 1.10 = 1,320 bricks with 10% waste.

Frequently asked questions

Where does 60 bricks per square metre come from?

It is the common figure for a standard brick laid with a 10 mm mortar joint in a single skin. A different brick size or joint changes it, so adjust the figure if yours differs.

Does this cover a double-skin wall?

No. A double-skin (cavity) wall needs roughly twice the bricks. Run the calculator once per skin, or double the wall area.

What is the mortar guide based on?

A rough guide of one bag per 100 bricks. It is a planning figure only — the mix and joint size change the real amount, so confirm with your supplier.

Why add 10% waste?

Bricks are cut at openings and corners, and some break in transport and handling. The allowance covers both.
