Percentage Change Calculator

How much a value rose or fell, as a percentage of where it started.

Percentage change

—

Old value
New value

How it works

Change = new value − old value
Change % = change ÷ old value × 100 (a negative result means a decrease)

Worked example: old 200, new 250 gives a change of +50, so change % = 50 ÷ 200 × 100 = +25%, an increase. Reversed — old 250, new 200 — the change is −50, so change % = −20%, a decrease.

Frequently asked questions

Why can’t I work out percentage change from zero?

Because the change is divided by the old value, and dividing by zero has no answer. You need a non-zero starting value.

What does a negative percentage change mean?

The new value is smaller than the old one — a decrease. A positive result means an increase.

Is percentage change the same as percentage points?

No. Going from 20% to 25% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a percentage change of 25%.
