Required run rate

—

How it works

Runs needed = target − current score
Required run rate = runs needed ÷ overs remaining

Worked example: chasing 280 at 150 for no loss with 20 overs left, the runs needed are 280 − 150 = 130, and the required rate is 130 ÷ 20 = 6.50 runs per over.

Frequently asked questions

Is the target the score to beat, or to tie?

The target is the score the chasing team must reach to win outright in a limited-overs match — one more than the first innings total. A tie happens at the first innings total itself.

What if overs remaining is zero?

Then no more runs can be scored, so there is no required rate. The calculator shows a dash until you enter overs remaining above zero.

Does this account for wickets in hand?

No. Required run rate is purely runs divided by overs. Wickets change how risky the chase is, but they do not change the arithmetic of the rate itself.
