Exam Score Needed Calculator
The exam score you need, given your current grade and the weights of both parts.
Exam score needed
How it works
Needed = (target − current × current weight) ÷ exam weight Weights are entered as percentages; the formula converts them to decimals. The two weights should add to 100%.
Worked example: a current grade of 75% worth 60% of the course, with an exam worth 40%, aiming for 80% overall, needs (80 − 75 × 0.60) ÷ 0.40 = (80 − 45) ÷ 0.40 = 87.50% on the exam.
Frequently asked questions
What if the two weights do not add to 100%?
Then part of the course is unaccounted for and the answer will be off. The calculator shows the weight total, so check it before trusting the result — it should read 100%.
What if the needed score is over 100%?
Then the target cannot be reached, even with a perfect exam. Lower the target, or check whether the exam weight you entered is really that small.
How is this different from the final grade calculator?
It is the same idea with both weights entered separately, instead of assuming the current work is everything except the final. Use this one when your course splits the marks differently.
