How it works
Words = text split on whitespace Sentences = pieces split on . ! ? Reading time = words ÷ 200 words per minute
Worked example: “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It runs every morning.” has 13 words, 67 characters (55 without spaces) and 2 sentences, and takes about 4 seconds to read at 200 words per minute.
Frequently asked questions
What counts as a word?
Any run of characters separated by spaces or line breaks. A hyphenated word like “well-known” counts as one word, and numbers count as words too.
What reading speed is assumed?
200 words per minute, a common average for adult silent reading. Fast readers will be quicker; the figure is a guide, not a test.
Are sentences counted from abbreviations?
No special handling: a full stop ends a sentence here, so “Dr. Smith” counts as two sentences. For ordinary prose the count is right.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. Everything runs in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, stored or logged.
