Net run rate

—

How it works

Balls = overs × 6 (30.3 overs = 183 balls)
Scored rate = runs scored ÷ (balls faced ÷ 6)
Conceded rate = runs conceded ÷ (balls bowled ÷ 6)
Net run rate = scored rate − conceded rate

Worked example: 280 runs in 50 overs against 240 runs conceded in 50 overs gives a scored rate of 5.60 and a conceded rate of 4.80, so net run rate is 5.60 − 4.80 = +0.80. Score 300 instead and the net rate rises to 6.00 − 4.80 = +1.20.

Frequently asked questions

What does a positive net run rate mean?

The team scores faster than it concedes, per over. A positive rate is better; in a tied points table the team with the higher net run rate finishes above the other.

Can I use this for a whole tournament?

Yes, if you enter tournament totals: all runs scored, all overs faced, all runs conceded and all overs bowled across every match. The formula is the same; only the totals are bigger.

How are overs like 49.5 handled?

As cricket writes them: 49.5 means 49 overs and 5 balls (299 balls), not 49.5 decimal overs. The calculator converts balls before dividing.

What about all-out innings?

In official net run rate, a team bowled out counts as having faced its full overs, even if it was dismissed earlier. This calculator uses the overs you enter, so for an all-out innings enter the full allocation.
