Wallpaper Calculator vs doing it by hand — which is faster?

WhiteUI · A plain-English guide to the Wallpaper Calculator

Done by hand, a wallpaper count is one division and one round-up: 30 ÷ 5 = 6 rolls, or 32 ÷ 5 = 6.4, rounded up to 7 rolls. Nobody needs a calculator for a single room with round numbers, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. The calculator earns its place when the numbers stop being round, when there are several rooms, and when a unit conversion sits in the middle of the job.

Where by hand goes slow

Take three rooms. Room one: 34.4 square metres at 5 square metres per roll, which is 34.4 ÷ 5 = 6.88, rounded up to 7 rolls. Room two: 60 square metres at the same coverage, 60 ÷ 5 = 12 rolls. Room three: 300 square feet, which first needs converting — 300 ÷ 10.764 = 27.9 square metres — then 27.9 ÷ 5 = 5.58, rounded up to 6 rolls. By hand that is three divisions, one conversion and three round-ups, each a chance to slip a digit. In the calculator it is three pairs of inputs, with the conversion done once and the rounding applied the same way every time.

Where by hand still wins

Checking a single answer is faster by hand, and you should do it: if the calculator says 7 rolls for 34.4 square metres at 5 per roll, the hand check is 34.4 ÷ 5 = 6.88, rounded up to 7. That check takes seconds and catches the one error the calculator cannot catch, which is a wrong input. The honest verdict is therefore a split one: use the calculator for the repeated work and the conversions, and use by hand for the final check on each room. Speed comes from the calculator; confidence comes from the check.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do a wallpaper count by hand?

Yes. Divide the net wall area by the coverage per roll and round up. 32 ÷ 5 = 6.4, so 7 rolls.

When is the calculator faster than by hand?

With several rooms, awkward numbers, or a square feet to square metres conversion in the middle of the job.

Should I still check the calculator answer?

Yes, by hand, once per room. The check catches wrong inputs, which the calculator cannot catch on its own.
