How it works

Box: length × width × height
Cylinder: π × radius² × height
Sphere: 4/3 × π × radius³
1 cubic metre = 1,000 litres

Worked example: a box 4 m × 3 m × 2 m holds 24 m³, which is 24,000 litres. A cylinder of radius 2 m and height 5 m holds π × 4 × 5 = 62.83 m³, and a sphere of radius 3 m holds 4/3 × π × 27 = 113.10 m³.

Frequently asked questions

How many litres are in a cubic metre?

Exactly 1,000. A 24 m³ tank therefore holds 24,000 litres.

Is this the inside or outside volume?

It is the volume from the dimensions you enter. For a tank, enter the inside dimensions to get the capacity.

What if my measurements are in centimetres?

Convert to metres first. A box of 400 cm × 300 cm × 200 cm is 4 m × 3 m × 2 m, which is 24 m³.

Why is the sphere formula 4/3 × π × r³?

That is the exact geometric result for a sphere. The 4/3 factor is what separates a sphere from a cylinder of the same radius and height.
