EMI Calculator for students — with examples

WhiteUI · A plain-English guide to EMIs

Student loans work like other loans, with one twist: many let you skip payments while you study, under a moratorium. The EMI itself is calculated the same way, but what happens during the moratorium changes the total a lot — interest usually keeps accruing and gets added to the loan, so you start repaying a larger amount than you borrowed.

Worked example

Borrow ₹2,00,000 at 12% a year for 5 years, with repayment starting immediately. The EMI is ₹4,449 a month, the total payment is ₹2,66,933 and the interest is ₹66,933. That is the clean case, and it is the right baseline for comparing offers.

What a moratorium does

Suppose interest accrues unpaid for two years on that same ₹2,00,000 at 12%. Roughly ₹50,000 of interest piles up, so repayment starts on about ₹2,50,000 instead. The EMI for the remaining tenure then rises, and the total interest grows with it. Some lenders let you pay the interest during the moratorium — doing so keeps the loan at ₹2,00,000 and saves a noticeable amount over the full tenure.

How to use the calculator as a student

Run the clean case first, then run it again on the larger amount to see the moratorium’s cost. Compare that with the cost of paying interest during study, if your budget allows it. Also check whether your course’s lender offers a concession for interest paid during the moratorium — some do, and it changes the comparison. This is general information, not loan advice; confirm the exact terms with your lender.

Frequently asked questions

What is a moratorium?

A period, usually covering the course plus a few months after, during which you are not required to pay EMIs. Interest may still accrue, depending on the lender.

Does interest accrue during a moratorium?

Usually yes, unless the lender says otherwise. Unpaid interest is typically added to the principal, which raises every later EMI.

Can I repay early without penalty?

Many education loans allow early repayment, but terms vary. Check the prepayment clause before assuming you can clear the loan early.
